The Unbuilt Darlings : Exhibit A
SEED FOREST is an exhibition/installation that aims to provide children aged 5-12 with a casual learning experience in planting and urban permaculture. Its contents and tie-in activities are designed to familiarize children with ubiquitous homegrown herbs and vegetables, sowing the seeds of environmental awareness among the younger generation.
SEED FOREST contains an abstract field of seed trunks—tall, sculptural columns filled with seed balls. Covering the ground is a formation of multiple low platforms, laser-cut with foliage patterns, to resemble a forest canopy. These platforms multifunction as seating and tabletop surfaces, where children and parents can sit around observing up-close potted plants & seed beds and participating in various workshop activities. The entire upside-down tree canopy can then be seen reflected onto the mirrored ceiling plane.
The whimsical space is semi-outdoor, with an open connection to the central public area. Proximity to the outdoor vegetable garden allows flow of related indoor & outdoor activities between the two spaces. Seed balls, along with planting instructions, are available for children and parents to pick up and grow at home, or try planting on site at the vegetable garden.
